Haruhiko Arai has written for over 50 feature films during his 50-year career as a screenwriter, starting out writing pinku eiga directed by Koji Wakamatsu in 1967. However, only 3 times has Arai directed himself – his last being Kakou no Futari which revisits some of Arai’s Roman porno roots. There is nothing particularly noteworthy or innovative about the setting: two 30-something former lovers reunite after years on the eve of one woman’s wedding and give in to renewing their passion. They eat, talk about philosophy, reflect upon their pasts, self-analyze themselves, and engage in sexual relations – the treatment is very non-dramatized and minimal. Through the course of the film, viewers are given access to key details about its characters’ pasts that could impact how they act now. Actor chemistry and performative quality become the most defining qualities here. Kumi Takeuchi and Tasuku Emoto performed adequately, yet none of their passion translated to physical action. Story-wise, the film takes place against an emotional backdrop following 2011 tsunami and nuclear plant disaster, trying to depict this against another imminent natural disaster that never really comes into full play; ultimately making this forgettable film experience all that much worse.
